History: Formed at St Pol in February 1917 as No 9 Squadron, Royal Naval Air Service beeing renumbered on 1 April 1918.

Origin/meaning

During the World War I the Squadron claimed to have shoot down the Red Baron Manfred von Richthofen, symbolised by the falling Eagle in the Badge. The Badge was approved in August 1941
