Origin/meaning

The shield refers the two main provinces of the Diocese of Dunedin. The blue and gold reference Otago and the maroon references Southland. The blue bend represents the Aparima River with a shepherd’s Staff referencing the Bishop’s role as shepherd of the people of the Church of the Diocese of Dunedin.

The chief has an indented line referring to the Takitimu Mountains and bears an image of the Blessed Sacrament with a black Chi Rho, one of the earliest forms of christogram, formed by supenimposing the first two (capital) letters—chi and rho (XP)—of the Greek word XPIZTOZX (Christos) in such a way that the vertical stroke of the rho intersects the centre of the chi. The Sacrament is surrounded by a golden splendour.
