Origin/meaning

The red and gold are the colours of the city of Mechelen, the main seat of the archbishop. The symbol in the upper hart symbolises the Holy Heart of Jesus and the 'spiritual family of Charles de Foucauld’ of which he is a member.

The wavy bend symbolises the Dijle and Zenner rivers in the archdiocese and is a symbol for baptism.

The lower half shows a canting linden tree (Terlinden means 'near the linden tree').

The motto Fratelli tutti means that 'we are all brothers'.
