66TH WEAPONS SQUADRON, US AIR FORCE

History: Constituted 66 Pursuit Squadron (Interceptor) on 20 Nov 1940. Activated on 15 Jan 1941. Redesignated: 66 Pursuit Squadron (Interceptor) (Twin Engine) on 31 Jan 1942; 66 Fighter Squadron (Twin Engine) on 15 May 1942; 66 Fighter Squadron on 1 Jun 1942; 66 Fighter Squadron, Single Engine on 21 Aug 1944. Inactivated on 7 Nov 1945. Activated on 15 Aug 1946. Redesignated: 66 Fighter Squadron, Jet on 20 Jul 1948; 66 Fighter-Interceptor Squadron on 20 Jan 1950. Inactivated on 8 Jan 1958. Redesignated 66 Fighter Weapons Squadron on 22 Aug 1969. Activated on 15 Oct 1969. Inactivated on 30 Dec 1981. Redesignated 66 Weapons Squadron on 24 Jan 2003. Activated on 3 Feb 2003.

Air defense in US, Dec 1941-Jun 1942. Combat in MTO, 7 Oct 1942-2 May 1945. Air Defense in Alaska, Aug 1946-Dec 1957 and US west coast area, Dec 1957-Jan 1958. Conducted F-105 Wild Weasel training, 1969-1975 and T-39 electronic warfare officer training, 1969-c. 1972. Assumed responsibility for F-4C Wild Weasel training in Sep 1971 but became non-operational in Jul 1975 when aircraft were transferred. Reorganized as an A-10 Squadron on 1 Oct 1977 and assumed responsibility for A-10 training until inactivated in Dec 1981.
