WIEN-GUMPENDORF

State : Wien (Vienna)

W-gumpen.jpg

Origin/meaning

The name derives from the old word "gump(e)", meaning a small pond or stretch of water (e.g. left after a sudden flood). Gumpendorf lies in the valley of the river Wien and had more than its share of floods. The arms are those of the Muschinger family, who owned the lands of the village in the 16th century.

Gumpendorf is now a part of the 6th municipal district, Mariahilf.
