Origin/meaning
Wetter received city rights in 1223 and was ruled jointly by the Counts of Hessen and the archbishops of Mainz. The oldest seals date from the 13th and 14th century and show the count and a bishop in a large gothic building. The smaller seals, however showed only the arms of the two, the lion of Hessen and the wheel of Mainz. The lily was added in the 15th century, its meaning is not known, it may be the symbol of St. Mary.
