Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on July 31, 1979.

The oldest seal was made in 1529 and show a man, who is turning a stone (a canting symbol, wenden=to turn and Stein=stone). In the 17th century seals and images the man is shown as a miner, the colours are known since 1718. Later seals and images all show the composition, but the size and shape of the elements has varied widely during the centuries, see image below from Hupp in the 1920s.

Literature: Stadler, 1964-1971, 8 volumes; Hupp, O: Kaffee Hag albums, 1920s
