German Geteilt und oben gespalten; vorne in Schwarz ein rot gekrönter, rot bewehrter goldener Löwe, hinten die bayerischen Rauten; unten in Rot auf grünem Dreiberg eine grüne Weide.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on January 25, 1510 from Prince Ludwig of the Pfalz.

Previously the city only used a seal with the canting willow (Weide). The new arms combined the tree with the lion of the Pfalz, and the diamonds of the Wittelsbach dynasty, Princes of the Pfalz. All later seals and arms show the same composition, the colours of the lower half, however, were often shown as green in silver, as shown by Hupp in the 1920s, see below.
