Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on May 14, 1992.

The arms show a fortified city with three towers, with in the gate the small arms of the Archdiocese of Magdeburg. The city became a possession of the archbishops of Magdeburg in the 14th century, and the oldest known seals of the city date fom the same time. These already show the same composition.

Until 1992 the city used arms with a similar composition, but with different colours, see below.
