Origin/meaning

Vlotho first got city rights in the 13th century, but this did not result in the growth of the city. Only in 1719 the town officially became a city.

There are no historical arms or seals known before 1650. The present arms (granted in 1970) are based on this seal. The division line represents the Weser river, the upper part is taken from the arms of the counts of Ravensberg, who owned the city in the 13th and 14th century. The lilies in the lower part represent the Cistercian monastery in Vlotho, which existed from 1258-1550.
