The arms were officially granted on June 20, 1960.
The arms show the (huge) local castle built by the Knights Templar ("Castelo Templario"), and which is situated on a large hill. The left cross depicts the cross of Templars. The right cross depicts the cross of the Order of Christ which was the name of a military order founded in 1318.This order was the heritage of the Knights Templar in Portugal, after the suppression of the Templars in 1312.
