Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1955.

The bear in the arms is derived from the 18th century seal of the town. The town at the time was named Allendorf im Bärenschiessen, and the seal showed a canting bear.
The striped lion is the lion of Hessen, the wheel is derived from the arms of the State of Mainz. The town historically belonged many centuries to Mainz, later to Hessen.
