SCHEER

State : Baden-Württemberg
District (Kreis) : Sigmaringen (until 1973 Saulgau)
Additions : 1973 Heudorf bei Mengen

Wappen von Scheer/Arms (crest) of Scheer
Official blazon
German In Rot unter einem silbernen Fisch (Huchen) eine mit den geöffneten Schneiden nach oben gekehrte silberne Schneiderschere, darunter ein sechsstrahliger goldener Stern.
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The scissors in the arms are canting (Scheere in German), and already appear on the oldest known seal of the city, dating from 1310. The fish and star also appear on the seal. The fish probably indicates the importance of fishing in the Donau river. The golden star is a common symbol of the Habsburg dynasty, to which the city belonged at the time.

During the 15th until 19th century the star was often replaced by a rose. Otherwise the composition, not the shape and size of the symbols, remained the same.

Around 1925 the fish was placed in a blue chief. This was never officially confirmed and since the 1960s the city returned to the old arms ads shown above.
