Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on November 20, 1876.
The arms show the arms of the combined cities of Sankt Johann and Saarbrücken as used from 1456-1856 as an escutcheon on the Royal Prussian eagle. The arms were also used as 'small arms', i.e. without the Prussian eagle
The small arms from 1876 |
Sankt Johann became a separate city in 1859 and from 1859-1876 only a red rose was used as arms. The origin of the rose is not known, but was used as the symbol for the city since 1456.
