State : Saarland

Wappen von Saarbrücken (kreis)/Arms (crest) of Saarbrücken (kreis)
Official blazon
German blazon wanted
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The district Saarbücken existed from 1816-1974 and used no arms. In 1974 a unique district (Stadtverband) was formed with the city of Saarbrücken and surrounding area. In 2007 it was renamed to Regionalverband Saarbrücken.

The arms are derived from the arms of the Counts of Nassau-Saarbrücken, with the lions in the opposite quarters. The largest part of the district was originally part of the County of Nassau-Saarbrücken. The silver lion is the old lion of the County of Saarbrücken, the golden lion is the lion of Nassau. The combination of the lions also appears in the arms of the small Belgian municipality of Bekkevoort.
