Origin/meaning

The arms show a patient, under the hand of God and above the castle taken from the arms of the city of Edinburgh. The bordure shows the main tools of the surgeon's trade. The hand of God has also been described as the hand being the most important surgical instrument, with which he collects information by palpation and also dessects with.
