Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The personal arms of the bishop have changed during the years. The lion is taken from a Malone family arms from Ireland (not related to the bishop though) and has been retained in all versions of his arms. The stars disappeared after becoming Bishop of Portland.

The chief shows symbols for St. Joseph (carpenter square, or silver chevron) and St. Mary (star-lily flower-monogramme), to honor and acknowledge His Excellency's deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

I have no information on the oil lamp and cross in the first arms.

For his motto Bishop Malone has chosen the phrase "LIVE THE TRUTH IN LOVE." With this phrase, His Excellency, Bishop Malone expresses that as Christians, all of us are called upon to proclaim the truth that is Jesus Christ and his message, especially by the witness of our lives.

The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop by instruction of the Holy See, of March 1969, confirmed in March 2001.
