Origin/meaning
As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.
The tower and the dog are canting elements, the name of the Bishop is of German origin and can be translated as 'dog-houses'. A castle used in pursuing the hunt where the hunting hounds were lodged.
The center tower of the castle supports a gold cross bottony taken from the coat-of-arms of Carroll College, Helena, where Archbishop Hunthausen was a student, professor, and president.
In honor of the family of his mother, Archbishop Hunthausen has his shield divided, or sheared, into two tinctures in a line like one made with a pinking shears. This represents Mrs. Hunthausen's maiden name, Tuchscherer: in German, a shearer of cloth.
The motto, chosen when he was consecrated Bishop of Helena, is from the Lord's Prayer, "Fiat Volunta Tua" -- "Thy Will Be Done."
