The arms are based on the arms of the Lords of Wolfenbüttel-Asseburg, who granted the city rights in 1220. Ever since the 13<sup>th</sup> century the seals and arms show the running wolf above the garbs. Until the 17<sup>th</sup> century the field was silver only. The colours of the garbs and other parts have changed often during the centuries (see image below).
