Origin/meaning

The personal arms of Bishop Zurek symbolizes his life, his heritage and his admiration for His Holiness John Paul II. The red colour is the dominant color in the arms and the flag of the Czech Republic. By the use of this color the bishop honours the ethnic heritage of his parents. On the field is placed a gold cross that is taken from the arms of Pope John Paul II, and like the cross in the Holy Father's arms this cross, too, is skewed to the upper left. In the center of this cross is placed a Bluebonnet blossom, proper. The use of the indigenous flower is to signify that it has been in Central Texas that Bishop Zurek has ministered to God's Holy People.

Within the quarters that are created by the cross on the field are a silver "Lone Star of Texas," to honer the two parishes where Bishop Zurek has had the privilege to serve as pastor. The lamb is above an open book, of the Word, and this volume is used to recognize the time that His Excellency served as Vocations director including 2 years that he served as President of the National Conference of Diocesan Vocations Directors. It is by way of added significance that across the bottom of the shield are the symbols of Word and Sacrament which are the center and focus of the life of every priest and bishop.

For his motto, the phrase "SECUNDUM COR TUUM" was chosen. These words, taken from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah (Jer.3:15) are part of the phrase (Pastores Dabo Vobis secundum cor tuum) that was the title for the Apostolic Exhortation by Pope John Paul II on the Formation of Priests.

The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop by instruction of the Holy See, of March 1969, confirmed in March 2001.

After becoming Bishop of Amarillo, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop. The personal arms have been changed, now showing an American eagle, the wheat, book and lone star in a different position. When in 2011 the diocesan arms of Amarillo changed, his arms changed again.
