Origin/meaning

The arms were probably devised in 1819 and are not historical. The tree seems to have been a grape vine, but was later transformed into a tree. The arms would thus indicate the rich forests and the importance of the wine making in the area. All historical seals and arms show only the wheel of the State of Mainz. The town belonged from the early 14th century until 1803 to the State of Mainz, and from 1803-1814 to the Grand-Duchy of Frankfurt. From 1814 it was part of Bavaria. The bishops of Mainz also granted the city rights somewhere between 1317 and 1345.
