Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on June 10, 1987.

The cross is taken from the former arms of the Borough of Mansfield. The helmets are taken from the arms of Mansfield Woodhouse. The deer antlers symbolise the deer in the Sherwood Forest in the district.

The crest shows a Sherwood forest oak tree taken from the crest of Mansfield Borough. The original crosses at the base of the tree are replaced by pick axes as symbols for the mining industry. The two lions are taken from the arms of Warsop.

The supporters are a stag on the right and a lion on the left of the shield. The stag symbolises again the Sherwood Forest, which is further symbolised by the oak leaves on both supporters. Both supporters wear a ducal crown around the neck, which symbolises the unofficial term Dukeries associated with the area.

The motto is taken from the old arms of Mansfield and means "Industry flourishes as the oak".

The oak stands for the Forest of Sherwood, the crosslets are those of the Howards, and the stars from those of the Murrays, Earls Mansfield.
