Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on January 8, 1955.

The district was the center of the large and influential State and diocese of Mainz. The arms thus show the wheel of the State of Mainz as a breast-shield on the Imperial eagle. Several cities in the district originally were Imperial cities, such as Oppenheim and Nierstein.

Literature: Stadler, 1964-1971, 8 volumes.
