Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on November 11, 1956 and (without supporter) again on December 3, 1984.
The old arms are those of Frederik Romberg, last Lord of Machelen, who was elevated to Baron in 1784 by Emperor Joseph II of Austria. As he was an overseas trader by profession, his arms showed a ship on full sea with the Austrian flag and a chief of the family arms.
The supporter was St. Gertrudis, the patron saint of the village.
The new arms are the old arms of Machelen without supporter and with a free canton for Diegem.
