Official blazon

In Rot einen Mönch in silbernem Gewand mit einem goldenen Kreuz am Gürtel, in der linken Hand ein Buch haltend.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on August 20, 1998.

The oldest arms of the city were used until 1948 and showed in gold a black monk, see below. The monk is a canting element, Mönch meaning monk.

As the name historically was derived from the Von Münch family, the arms were changed in 1948. The new arms showed a hand holding a spindle as a symbol of the local textile industry, as well as the arms of the Von Münch family, see below.

The arms from 1948-1990

In 1990 the historical arms were restored, but in the colours of the arms of the Von Münch family. It took, however, until 1998 before the arms were officially registered.
