The arms were granted on Janaury 3, 1912 by the Duke of Oldenburg.

The first and fourth quarter are identical to the same quarters in the arms of the [[State of Oldenburg]] at the time. The second quarter shows a church as a symbol for the local church, which was given to the Memleben monastery in 980 by Emperor Otto II, and which was the main church in the district. The third quarter shows a wing for the feather industry in the city, which was of importance in the 19<sup>th</sup> century, and a crown symbolises the 'pride and price of the local citizens'.
