Origin/meaning
As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.
The embattled bar is based on the coat of arms of the Diocese of Fort Wayne and signalizes the diocese in which Bishop Pursley was born, baptized, confirmed, ordained, served as a priest, and was consecrated as bishop. The blue symbolises the particular devotion to the Blessed Virgin.
The lion, "leo" in Latin, represents the baptismal name of the Bishop. The slip of parsley refers to the surname of His Excellency.
