Origin/meaning

The arms were first granted in 1649 by Duke Georg Wilhelm of Lüneburg. The wave symbolises the river Aue, the origin of the lion is unknown, it probably just symbolises the power. It has also been stated that the lion is derived from the Latin name of the town, Leonoviense.
