Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on April 22, 1922.

The cross is the St. Georges cross of London. The blue and gold chequers are derived from the Warenne family, see also Surrey. The border is derived from the arms of Cornwall, part of the borough belongs to the Duchy of Cornwall. The ecclesial emblems signify that the archbishops of Canterbury have a residence in Lambeth since the thirteenth century.

The lamb is both a religious as a canting symbol. The wavy bar stands for the Thames.
