State : Thüringen
Additions : 1994 Artern (partly), Sondershausen

Kyffhaus.kreis.jpg

Origin/meaning :
The arms were granted on October 26, 1994.

The lion is the lion of the Counts (later Princes) of Schwarzburg, who, in the Middle Ages, ruled most of the present district. The small shield shows the arms of the Counts of Mansfeld, who, in the 18th century, acquired several estates in the district.

The base of the shield symbolises the mountainous terrain, with many forests, and the Wipper river.

Literature : Linder and Olzog, 1996.
