Origin/meaning

The arms show the patron saint of the city, St. Martin.

The arms were supposedly granted in 1208 by King Philipp of Sachsen. Previously the city is supposed to have used St. Stephen in its seal. This legend, however, most likely is not true, as in 1208 the town had no city rights (granted early 14th century).

The oldest seal is known from 1359 and shows already St. Martin. All later seals and images show the same saint.
