Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on December 16, 1912.

Kamen received city rights in 1245 and the oldest seal is known from 1248. The seal showed a wheel below the chequered bar of the Counts of the Mark, who ruled the city at the time. The arms remained unchanged until the 17^th century, when the wheel was placed above the bar.
