Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1907 and are based on the local seal from 1535.

Königstein was granted city rights in 1313 from the Lords of Münzenberg-Falkenstein. The towers in the arms symbolise the Reichsburg castle. The red and golden field is the arms of the Lords of Münzenberg-Falkenstein. The black lion is the arms of the Counts of Nürings, who ruled the area in the 12th century. The were succeeded by the Lords of Münzenberg-Falkenstein, who, in turn were succeeded in 1418 by the Lords of Eppstein. The chevrons in the lower part of the small shield are taken from the arms of the Lords of Eppstein.
