Origin/meaning

Unlike many other US bishops, he did not impale his personal arms with the diocesan arms. The chevron is the symbol of St. Joseph the Carpenter, Foster Father of Our Lord and the Archbishop's name patron. The three owls are from the arms of the Hurley family of Ireland. The chief with the three crosses botonny fitchy are taken from the shield of the Diocese of Cleveland where he was born, was educated and where he spent seventeen years of his priestly life.
