Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on June 24, 1955.

The blue and gold waves represent the sea and sands, the white roses are for Yorkshire. The heraldic fountain refers to Hornsea Mere, the largest natural lake in Yorkshire.

The crest is a slightly altered form of the white rose upon the sun badge of Edward IV (of the House of York). The rose and sun are a further reference to the county and Hornsea's east coast situation and plentiful sunshine. The mural crown is a common symbol of local government.
