GROSS-GERAU (GG)

State : Hessen

Grossger.kreis.jpg

Origin/meaning :
The arms were granted on January 25, 1967.

The arms are a combination of the red and white bars of the arms of Hessen, the two black bars of the Counts of Isenburg and the escutcheon with the arms of the Von Dornberg family. The district was part of the Isenberg possessions, which became part of Hessen in 1659. The Von Dornberg family were the ancestors of the Counts of Katzenelnbogen, a powerful family in the area.
