Origin/meaning

The arms with the ladder first appear in a banner from 1705. The ladder is probably derived from a bend, which was placed over the arms of the Hildesheim Abbey, to which the town belonged. The use of a bend over the Hildesheim arms is known 15th century secret seals. The main seals show the H. Madonna with child, the patron saint of Hildesheim, and St. Matthew, the local saint.

In the 19th century the ladder was silver and placed on a shield divided per bend from gold and green. In 1940 the present arms were officially granted.
