The arms are based on the oldest known seal of the city, dating from 1295. The seal shows the typical two gates (Ober- and Untertor) and the city wall in between. Even though the shape of the castle has changed during the years, the basic composition remained the same. | |||

Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on May 21, 1968.
