Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1935 after the merger of the cities Garmisch and Partenkirchen. The arms are those of the oldest known Counts of Werdenfels, the Counts of Eschenlohe, known from 1260-1261. See also Eschenlohe. The area historically belonged to the County Werdenfels until 1803. From 1294-1803 the county was a possession of the Bishops of Freising and used the Freising arms.
