Official blazon

In Rot zwei silbern gesäumte, schrägrechte blaue Wellenbalken, überdeckt mit dem silbernen, mit einem von Silber und Rot geteilten Schildchen belegten holsteinischen Nesselblatt.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on September 18, 1986.

Friedrichstadt was founded in 1621 by Duke Friedrich II von Gottorp of Holstein for Dutch religious refugees. The settlers named the new town after the duke. The town still looks like a Dutch city, with canals etc.

The arms are based on the oldest seal of the city, which dates from 1625. It shows the rivers Eider and Treene, which run through or near the city, behind the arms of Holstein-Gottorp, with the Nesselblatt (see kielKiel). In 1986 the arms were slightly changed, by adding the silver lines. This is according to the heraldic rule of tincture.
