Freienhagen received city rights in the middle of the 13<sup>th</sup> century. The fist seal shows a knight, holding the arms of the Counts of [[Waldeck (State)|Waldeck]], with a sword in his other hand and sitting on a throne. On the second seal, dating from the 14<sup>th</sup> century, the throne was replaced by the tower and the two dragons. The arms were granted in 1935 and are based on the second seal.
