Origin/meaning

Freienhagen received city rights in the middle of the 13th century. The fist seal shows a knight, holding the arms of the Counts of Waldeck, with a sword in his other hand and sitting on a throne. On the second seal, dating from the 14th century, the throne was replaced by the tower and the two dragons. The arms were granted in 1935 and are based on the second seal.
