German heraldry:

Selected collector's items from Germany:

ERFURT (EF)

State : Thüringen
Incorporated into: 1994 Erfurt (city), Gotha, Sömmerda

Wappen von Erfurt (kreis)/Arms (crest) of Erfurt (kreis)
Official blazon
German blazon wanted
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on September 8, 1992.

The arms show the wheel of the city of Erfurt and also symbolises industry. The left half shows a woad plant (Isatis tinctoria), which was cultivated for its pigment production. Cultivation was for many centuries an important source of income in the district.

Until 1949 the district seems to have used a shield divided by a wavy division line and with three wheatears for agriculture and the wheel of Erfurt.
