Origin/meaning

The arms show a winged lion, the symbol of St. Mark. The parish of Erbach has St. Mark as its patron saint, since at least 1258. The oldest seals of Erbach show a wavy fess, symbolising a stream (Bach = stream). The lion appears in seals and later in the arms, since the early 15^th century. During the centuries the arms never changed, regardless of the political situation. Only in the 18^th century, when the Bishops of Mainz became the local overlords, the wheel of Mainz was added to the arms. In this century the wheel disappeared. The colours are the only reminder of the arms of Mainz.
