Official blazon
Gespalten von Schwarz und Silber; vorne auf grünem Boden eine silberne Kirche mit romanischem Turm und roten Dächern, hinten ein linksgewendeter, von Silber und Schwarz gevierter, rot bezungter Brackenrumpf.
Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on May 22, 1962.
The arms are based on the oldest known seals of the town, which date from the early 17th century. According to legend, the arms were granted to the town in 1552 by the Margraves of Nürnberg, but no historical proof thereof exists.
The church in the right half is a canting element (Kirche=church). The quartered dog's head is derived from the crest of the Margraves of Nürnberg from the Hohenzollern dynasty. The town was a possession of the margraves since 1361.
In the 19th century a wavy bend was placed over the arms, but this was only short-lived and the old arms were restored.
