Origin/meaningThe arms were officially granted on May 22, 1962. The arms are based on the oldest known seals of the town, which date from the early 17th century. According to legend, the arms were granted to the town in 1552 by the Margraves of Nürnberg, but no historical proof thereof exists. The church in the right half is a canting element (Kirche=church). The quartered dog's head is derived from the crest of the Margraves of Nürnberg from the Hohenzollern dynasty. The town was a possession of the margraves since 1361. Hupp showed in the 1920s the same composition, but with a small river under the castle, see below.
