Per bend azure and gules, in sinister chief a coronet or, between 3 martlets argent, in dexter base a castle, the dexter tower ensigned by a mullet of the fourth. Motto: That All May Be One.
Origin/meaning
The castle is supposedly a canting element; for Herrmann as 'Lord of the Manor'; the castle representing the manor, the crowd the lordship. However, Herrmann, means soldier or, literally, army-man, not lord of the manor.
The martlets are taken from the arms of Saint Edward the Confessor, the patron saint of the Bishop. The star is the symbol for St. Mary, but is also part of the arms of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, where he was born, and the Archdiocese of Washington, where he became bishop.
The castle is also taken from the seal of the Mount Saint Mary's Seminary in Emmitsburg, which he attended.
