(1958) Vann sabel met een uitgeschulpt schuinkruis van goud - het schild geplaatst voor een Sint-Pieter houdende in de rechterhand de apostolische sleutels, gehecht aan de linkerarm van het personage en rechts onderstund door een leeuw en links door een griffioen, het geheel van goud.
(1993) In sabel een uitgeschu[l]pt schuinkruis van goud. Het schild geplaatst voor een Sint-Pieter houdende in de rechterhand een sleutel en in de linkerhand een gesloten boek, en gehouden rechts door een leeuw en links door een griffioen, beide van goud.

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on May 28, 1958 and confirmed on February 16, 1993.

The arms are those of the Roelants family, Lords of Dessel from 1666-1696, with the local patron saint, St. Peter. These arms appear for the first time on the seal of the local council from 1693 and remained in use until the late 18th century.

The blazon of 1993 states that the saint holds one key and a book, but the official image is identical to the arms of 1958, showing two keys and no book. Compare also Balen.
