Origin/meaning

The oldest seals of the city dates from the 14th and 15th century already show the local patron saint, St. Michael with the dragon. He holds in his hands two small shields, one with the striped lion of Thüringen, the other with the black lion of Meissen. In the 16th century the small shields are replaced by the sword and scales, as in the arms above. At the same time the small shield with the fleur-de-lis appears, the origing thereof is not known. Smaller seals of the city during later centuries showed the small dhield alon, sometimes with an angel as supporter.
