Wappen von Bretten

Official blazon

Von Silber und Blau senkrecht gerautet.

Origin/meaning

Bretten received city rights in the middle of the 13th century. The city was a possession of the Counts of Eberstein and the seals until 1349 thus show the arms of the Counts of Eberstein (a rose).

In 1349 the city becomes a possession of the Princes of the Pfalz and the seals show the arms of the Wittelsbach family, Princes of the Pfalz (see also Bayern). All later seals images show the same arms, but, contrary to the family arms, with the diamonds placed vertically.
